"It's all about the music…it brings the demon outta you" -Cmaxx
While hundreds, if not thousands of people crowded onto South Street for the ever popular and populated Greek Weekend, I, along with some friends (Hey Pat & Melissa) ventured forth to Abeline's to see the wacky, fun, and extremely talented band, The Freakin' Cads. Since this particular Saturday was PJ night at Abeline's, the band dressed in their finest nightgowns and robes and preformed two sets that were beyond compare. Before the show, I had the opportunity to join these fine gentlemen for a casual dinner. Each band member had their own personalities and influences, and after speaking with Dooner, Cmaxx, Pete, Jaff, Brian & Tom, I found that their musical tastes cover the entire musical spectrum. This is most apparent in their latest album, "Escape from Philly". With most of the members from the Philly area, the already critically acclaimed band of almost 5 years has followings at every venue they play. This evening was no exception.
After dinner, much discussion of music, any existing differences between Chardonnay & white wine, and the need for more recognition of local bands, it was time for the Cads to go on. Their first set was one of total energy and musical perfection that contained originals, and some covers laid down Cads style. With Jaff's steady rockin' beat, it was difficult not to at least dance in your chair. The harmonies between Dooner, Pete, Tom & Cmaxx were precise and really tight. Brian's keys and percussion were also a necessity. They added that little extra that a good band needs in order to be great. I also really liked the cool but very groovin' bass lines Tom was putting down. They definitely had my inner funk moving and shaking. I also found that Pete's sax playing is influenced by some jazz greats like Miles and Coltrane. It was very cool, but it also had the potential to be heard in most any style you can think. It's playing like that, which makes The Freakin' Cads stand out from every other Philly band out there. I was particularly blown away by Cmaxx's guitar playing. He made it look so easy and really fun, and his vocal range was also very impressive. And lastly, you can't forget the ever moving, ever dancing ball of intensity and activity that is Dooner. He has quite the stage presence and can rattle of funky rhymes faster than you can say, well, "funky rhymes". In fact the entire band was tight and really played together well. The quality of the music was just completely unbelievable. Not only is this the makings of a great band, but it is the makings of a group that has potential to go further than ever imagined.
Well, after a _very_ revealing intermission (by the audience & the band) they were back with just as much emotion and power as in their first set. I also learned during that intermission, that the audience was willing to bear all (and I do mean all) to make sure the Cads know they are appreciated. It was quite moving. Anyway, after covering one of my favorite SKA songs "Ranking Full Stop", originally done by The English Beat, I realized that this band officially won me over as a Cads fan. The set continued with one incredible tune after another, however the highlight of my evening was when they played the only song that truly defines Philly; "Me Llamo Es Scrapple". (Thanks guys, I really enjoyed it!)
Before I knew it, the Cads were done playing, and I reluctantly, and regretfully headed out the door to the over-crowded and trash filled street to make my way home. I certainly did not want that night to end. But I'll have to say when all is said and done, The Freakin' Cads put on a show that will leave you wanting more.
Overall, the band is just 100% fun, 100% intense, 100% Cads. They have a great time performing, which in turn allows the audience to have a great time too. I don't know anyone who wouldn't like these guys. They are worth seeing, worth listening to, and in the case of some audience members, worth getting half-naked for. It was a show of shows and a very unique experience for me.
